English Wine
English wines are now regularly winning awards in International Wine Competitions in blind tastings against Champagne and other leading international brands. The best English wines exhibit fresh, crisp, fruity characteristics and are light and lower in alcohol that wines produced in hotter regions. English wine is an ideal accompaniment to chicken and fish dishes and makes an excellent picnic wine for hot summer days.
There are currently more than 350 vineyards in the UK ranging in size from less than 1 acre to more than 240 acres. The majority of English vineyards are based in South East England where geology and climate provide ideal growing conditions. However there are vineyards in the UK as far north as Yorkshire!
The English wine market is booming with market growth at around 10% a year and with demand regularly outstripping supply. English wine production is set to double in the next five years and wine making enterprises range from part-time hobbyists to £10m publically quoted companies.
